Iâm sick of being in this castle. All. The. Time.
Karlâs probably right that itâs dangerous out there. I get it. Ever since I saw the look in Vinnieâs fatherâs eyes when I told him I was an Azurean. People donât like me. They donât trust me. Iâm doing some good, but I donât know how much. The reports I get are limited, and Iâm not even sure what to ask in order to get a real answer.
I need some real live data. I need to get out of this castle. I need a breath of fresh air.
Karl would say no, and so would Quint. Neither of them have left the castle since we got here, either. Quint hasnât seen Vinnie for over a month now.
That leaves me one person I can ask. Somrusee. She still goes out every day to teach, assess the city, and distribute information to people who can read. Itâs time we skipped a lesson on how to be queenly and try to find some of those ladies in waiting that Karl promised he would find for me. Or at least figure out what is going on in the city.
I step out of my luxurious bath, which is the size of the room Vinnieâs entire family lives in, and shake my head. Iâm an aristocrat. Iâm holed up in a castle, and I live in luxury. Maybe this is what power is supposed to be, but maybe itâs not. I wasnât in college very long, but I was there long enough to learn about the French Revolution.
People donât always like powerful people. Most of the time, they donât like them at all.
I pick out a dark blue dress. Itâs made of light fabric, but I feel pretty in it, and it isnât too hot. Somrusee says this particular cut is especially regal. Well, if Iâm going out today, Iâll need to look regal.
I spend a little extra time working out my hair before I hurry downstairs to meet Somrusee. Karl should be asleep now, and Quint is training the guard. Our lessons have been boring lately, anyway. Iâve been working on writing up some laws and trying to remember what I learned about Congress in school, but I havenât been very good at it. It can wait for another day.
Somrusee looks up when I come into the room. She smiles and stands with a small bow.
âYou should have told me you were finished. I would have sent Tavi up to empty the water and help you get dressed.â
Right. Exactly why I didnât say anything. I donât need a maid to help me dress myself.
I stride away from the guards, who stop at the door, and touch Somrusee on the arm. She is irritated about something, but she smiles in return. I donât think sheâs irritated at me, but Iâm not sure. I donât always interpret peopleâs emotions correctly, at least not yet.
âAre you up for something different today?â I whisper so only she can hear me.
âWhatâs that?â she asks.
